Naming and Foundation
The Greater Letaba Municipality was proclaimed in 1990 and constituted after the 2000 municipal elections.
Greater Letaba had been preceded by the Bolobedu - Hlanganani transitional council during 1995 - 2000.
Under its jurisdiction, fall the lowveld traditional communities of Sekgosese, Mamaila, Sekgopo, Pheeha, Phooko and Raphahlelo, the Balobedu communities of Mamaila , Modjadji, Rakwadu, the commercial farming areas of Duiwelskloof and Mooketsi and the traditional communities of Duvula and Mahuntsi who previously resorted under the Tiyani, Hlanganani District of Gazankulu.
The Southern boundary of the municipality is the Kgwekgwe- Lebjeng Mountain range. The municipality headquarters are at Modjadjiskloof previously known as Duiwelskloof.
